Undead with Ned and Jimbo

Anyone who has read this site for any length of time knows by now that we here at Otakugaijin love all things zombie. Whether it’s books, games, comics or films, if it’s got zombies in it, we’re interested. If we’re lucky, we sometimes find a hidden gem of rotted goodness. Other times, though, we’re not so lucky and all we end up with is a fistful of putrid sadness. The film, Undead, definitely falls into the latter category.

Despite being a low-budget film, Undead had all the ingredients to be a classic camp fest. Utilizing the time-tested cliché of germs from outer space wrecking havoc in a small town, Undead attempts to poke fun at the horror genre as a whole with larger-than-life characters and over the top zaniness. Replete with hilarious plot elements such as a triple barreled shotgun, nude alien invaders and zombie fish, Undead had all the right ingredients to be a classic zombie comedy.

Unfortunately, the whole point of the movie was to be a humorous take on zombie films and the horror genre as a whole, which is where the whole thing falls flat on its face like a fat guy doing a belly flop into an empty pool. Except for a few moments of brilliance, I was so bored I couldn’t wait for the whole experience to be over. Between the terrible CG and the zombies that kept popping back up like a bunch of knockdown clowns, the whole thing ends up resembling a bad Saturday morning cartoon.

Bottom Line:

Undead is an occasionally humorous zombie adventure that fails more often then it exceeds. Worth a look if your want something off beat, but don’t expect to come away impressed.

Final Score: 2 out of 5 stars
