Woah! Talk about something that totally makes my day. When I saw the announcement on my Facebook page and on the official FUNimation blog, my heart nearly exploded. Seriously, words fail to express how much I LOVE the Dance in the Vampire Bund manga. In the past, I’ve given the first two volumes of the manga glowing reviews. When I discovered that it was going to be turned into an anime a few months ago, I figured that it would NEVER see the light of day over here. Especially, when I read some of the articles on Sankaku Complex (complete with screen caps) the anime was continuing the manga’s long running endorsement of nude loli vampires and other rather taboo subject matters.

According the announcement, FUNimation will begin streaming the first four episodes of the Vampire Bund series complete with english subtitles this Friday (March 5th) at 10 a.m. CST for FREE(!) with new episodes to follow each week there after. Fans will also have the option of downloading higher quality versions to own for $1.99.

In related news, FUNimation also acquired the rights to the comedy seriesBaka and Test – Summon the Beasts. Sure it looks cute, but I could care less right now because freaking DANCE IN THE VAMPIRE BUND is coming to the U.S. TODAY!!! WOOOOOOO!!!!

To be fair though, I’ve included a video for that series as well…

Well that looks neat. Thanks for the excitement… probably not something I’d look into otherwise. She looks just like a character from Negima… and given that almost everything in that book is a spoof I wouldn’t be surprised if she was the inspiration.

I watched the first two episodes and I must sadly confess that I was unimpressed with this adaptation of the series. The first two episodes are complete rewrites of the beginning of the story and it seems like Shaft, the company producing it, is trying to shoehorn the show into a more traditional story. Not only have the first two episodes followed a monster of the week pattern, but the first episode was down right terrible. It was like watching episode zero from The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. When they actually start the story in episode two, the main male character turns out to have amnesia! Trust me, the manga is ten times better than what I’ve seen of the anime so far and that’s not even getting into the censorship issues.

BTW, although it’s a bit stereotypical, I actually enjoyed Baka and Test a heck of lot more. It was pretty funny and reminds me of another anime, but I can’t put my finger on it…

Aw that’s too bad. I like manga better anyway. Is it published in the US or do you read it online?

Although you can find it online, I purchased my copies on Amazon and my local bookstore. It’s currently published by Seven Seas and is well worth a read as long as you’re not turned off by some of the more taboo aspects of it. Check out my reviews of the first to volumes to find out more details. I do try to steer clear of major spoilers in my reviews, so it should be a fairly safe read if your interested.
