There's actually some good news in the pipeline on this one. Yen Press has recently announced that they will be offering a "combo pack" through certain participating online vendors where you can get the dust jacket free with the purchase of the book. Don't have the link handy, but I'll post something when I get the info...

Yeah, I totally agree there. The 'you need to buy the good one' clause is definitely insulting.

Yeah, I understand some of the motivation. It does make it fit in on the bookshelf by making it resemble the cover art style that seems to be popular with the fantasy crowd lately. It still sucks though because it's a terrible attempt when compared to the original art. I still wish they would offer a reversable cover or something packed in with the book rather then asking people like me to buy their manga magazine as well just so I can enjoy the beauty of original cover art.

I kind of understand their motivation (it was described on their site) but your analogy is pretty accurate. XD

Well, in this case, it's the light novel instead of the manga. It's got some manga style illustrations inside, but mostly it's just text. Thankfully those have been left intact and have avoided the horror of being recreated using a bucktoothed photoshopped model with a bristle brush coming out of her butt.
